Air Ship Captain and his Mate.
How can you not love them xD

I just wrote this..................................

It was a glorious day.
The sky pulsated with colors upon colors blending toghether, illuminating the clouds. Even the birds could be heard singing along, this high up.
The warm wind tugged and teased some strands out of Penelo's braids as she sat on the starboard. She could see the ocean down below as the waves wizzed by.

Everything was over.

The whole crazy adventure was over with.
Penelo couldn't help feeling a pang of sadness. It was a whole new excitement to travel around the world and saving it at the same time. To be a part of that was fulfilling and exhilirating... and yet, it had ended, something that probably will never repeat.
The airship was slowing to a quiet march through the sky and she knew instantly who it was that she heard scuffling far on the other side of the starboard behind her.
She stood up to turn and look at the boy who she had found alone that stormy night so many years ago. Crying and wanting nothing but to die out there in the rain from so much loss. She had tried to coax him up to his feet, to bring him along with her, knowing instantly that the Sickness and the fighting had destroyed his life too, like so many others.
But she had found that he was severely injured, barely conscious lying there in the mud. Alarmed, she had run to fetch her father who was on a supply errand with her, when she had strayed, hearing faint whimpers from a dark corner in that ghost of a town they had been passing by.
Penelo and her father had quickly carried the boy home with them... and that's where he had stayed. With her. Her best friend.
Even after her own family had been taken by the war, he had stayed by her side, had always been there for her.
A silent pillar to lean on, as she knew she was to him.

Vaan.

She couldn't imagine living life without him.
She watched his silver blonde hair rustle in the wind as he looked out into that eternal blue. His fingers were brushing absently along the balustrade of their airship.
It was a gift from Ashe after she had been restored to the throne, as a token of gratitude for their help.
Things had settled after that. Penelo had started her dancing career, thinking that she would be left to that life of comissions.
They had what they had always dreamed of: her, her dance, Vaan, his airship.

Didn't they?

And yet, like every time, Vaan had swept into her life without wasting a beat. His hand had reached out to her yet again and had asked her to be his Ship Mate.
She had wanted nothing more.

"Penelo." She looked up into Vaan's light blue eyes, started out of her reverie by the gentle calling of her name.
She smiled at him as he walked accross the starboard closer to her.

Sha had gained more than a ship mate after the long adventure.

There was no need for talk between them in that moment. His smile was all that she needed to understand how happy he was. The sadness she had felt for a thing that has passed, quickly dissipated as she realized how silly it was. Another chapter of her life might have ended, yet a new one had just started. Another chapter with Vaan. A whole new adventure was awaiting them.

And she would have it no other way.

Before Penelo realized what was happening, Vaan quickly seized her hand and twirled her to him, making them laugh out in mirth. He blocked the movement gently with his body, his hands and arms steadying her in his embrace.
"Where shall the sky bring us today?" Penelo grinned up at him.
"Wherever we feel like." He chuckled down at her.
"Any orders Captain?" Her pale blue eyes shined as she smiled warmly. The devious glint that Penelo so loved, shone in Vaan's eyes.

"Dance with me, Penelo," he whispered.

Even orphans have their happy endings.
